Nucleotide sequence encoding the membrane protein of the [BV strain 6/82 The full sequence of the membrane protein of IBV 6/82 is presented and compared with that for IBV Beaudette (1). The two strains share considerable homology with 58 nucleotide changes in the coding region of 675 nucleotides. These result in 18 amino acid changes (0) in the protein (225 amino acids). The changes are not randomly distributed as five occur within the first 14 amino acids at the N-terminal end, the region of the protein which is exposed on the surface of the virion. Despite these changes the two glycosylation sites (A) in this region are conserved. Three changes are tightly clustered at the COOH-end of the protein which is thought to protrude from the membrane inside the virus. Another five of the changes are within the three potential membrane spanning regions (although ugh all of these involve non-polar amino acids. In the 5' non-coding sequence the homology region is conserved and there appears to have been a deletion of 24 nucleotides just before the initiation codon.
